Coal tar is a highly viscous liquid obtained as a by-product of coal carbonization, consisting mainly of complex mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (including sulphur- and nitrogen-containing heterocycles) and phenolic compounds. Separation of coal tar into different fractions by distillation affords high-value products, such as naphthalene, anthracene oil or pitch.

In addition to these fractions, a number of liquids are also produced from coal tar distillation, including creosotes, light oils, phenolic (carbolic) oils and wash oils, as well as several rejects or by-products obtained from the purification of higher-value fractions such as naphthalene oils. Although some of the mentioned liquids have found a few practical uses, high-end applications for such liquids and rejects have been generally lacking.

The PROMOTEE project aims at finding novel, high-added value uses of these coal-derived liquids and rejects with the involvement of both coal tar distillers and the potential end-users of the developed products, thus constituting an important step towards the revalorization of these liquids and rejects.
This project is funded by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) of the European Union (EU) under Grant Agreement No 709741.
